Lithium vs AGM Solar Batteries

This is the single most impactful battery decision in solar: LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate) vs. AGM (absorbent glass mat). The technical details are in our Battery Types guide. This article focuses on the direct comparison and tells you which to buy.

The Core Tradeoff

LiFePO4 costs roughly 2–3× more upfront but delivers 2× the usable energy per battery and 5–10× the cycle life. Over a 10-year period, LiFePO4 is 50–70% cheaper than AGM when you account for replacements.

When LiFePO4 Wins (Most Scenarios)

Daily-cycling systems: off-grid homes, RVs, van life, boats, regular camping. The cycle life advantage means you buy one LiFePO4 battery bank instead of replacing AGM batteries 3–5 times. The efficiency advantage means your solar panels produce 10–15% more usable energy per day. The weight advantage matters enormously for mobile installations — 416 lbs less for a 5 kWh bank.

When AGM Wins (Specific Cases)

Rarely-cycled backup: If you cycle less than 20 times per year (grid-tied home with occasional outages), AGM lasts 15–25 years on calendar life alone. The upfront savings are real, and the per-cycle advantage of LiFePO4 doesn't apply.

Extreme cold without heating: If your batteries live in an unheated space that regularly drops below freezing and you can't add a heated battery enclosure, AGM charges reliably in cold conditions that would damage unheated LiFePO4.

Extremely tight budget: If the only alternative to AGM is no battery at all, an AGM bank gets you operational today. Plan to upgrade to LiFePO4 when budget allows.

The Verdict

For most solar battery installations in 2026, LiFePO4 is the right choice. The usable capacity and cycle life advantages make it the better investment even at higher upfront cost. AGM is a legitimate choice only in the specific scenarios listed above — and the list is getting shorter every year as LiFePO4 prices continue to fall.

⚠ Important: If you switch from AGM to LiFePO4, you must update your charge controller settings. LiFePO4 requires different charging voltages and no equalization charge. Using AGM settings on LiFePO4 can trigger the BMS to disconnect, leaving you without power. Most modern MPPT controllers have a dedicated LiFePO4 preset.
