Solar Panel Warranty
Solar panel warranties come in two distinct components: the product warranty covering manufacturing defects and physical failures, and the performance warranty guaranteeing minimum power output over time. Understanding both is essential for evaluating panel quality and protecting your investment over its 25-30 year lifespan.
The product warranty (also called the materials or workmanship warranty) covers defects in materials and manufacturing — things like delamination, junction box failures, frame corrosion, cell cracking, and connector issues. Standard product warranties range from 12 to 25 years depending on the manufacturer. Premium brands like LG (when available), REC, SunPower/Maxeon, and Panasonic offer 25-year product warranties. Budget panels may offer only 10-15 years.
The performance warranty guarantees that the panel will produce at least a specified percentage of its rated wattage after a given number of years. A typical performance warranty guarantees no more than 2% degradation in year one (accounting for initial LID) and no more than 0.5-0.55% per year thereafter, with a minimum of 80-84.8% of rated output guaranteed at year 25. Premium panels may guarantee 87-92% at year 25.
The year-25 performance guarantee is a key differentiator between panel tiers. A panel guaranteeing 84.8% at year 25 will produce meaningfully more energy over its life than one guaranteeing 80%. Across a 25-year lifespan, this difference compounds into a significant amount of additional generation.
Warranty claims require proof of purchase, professional installation (some manufacturers void warranties for DIY installs), and often documentation showing proper system design (appropriate inverter pairing, correct wiring configuration). Keep all purchase receipts and installation documentation for the full warranty period.
