Racking
Racking is the mounting hardware that secures solar panels to a roof, ground structure, or pole. It includes the rails, clamps, brackets, and fasteners that hold panels at the correct angle and orientation while withstanding wind loads, snow loads, and seismic forces for the 25-30 year lifespan of the solar system.
Roof racking systems attach to the building's structural members (rafters or trusses) using lag bolts, standoffs, and flashing that waterproof the penetration points. The standoffs lift aluminum rails above the roof surface, creating an air gap that allows water to flow underneath and provides ventilation behind the panels for cooling. Panels mount to the rails using mid-clamps (between panels) and end-clamps (at the edges).
Ground-mount racking uses posts driven into the ground or set in concrete footings, with cross-rails and panel mounting hardware similar to roof systems. Ground mounts allow optimal tilt angle and azimuth regardless of roof geometry, and they are easier to access for maintenance. They do require dedicated land area and additional materials, making them more expensive per watt than roof mounts.
